By "modified" I take it Jon is talking about installing the plug as a "modification." Meaning NGK's civil liability for insulator tip breakage becomes limited. Typically a corporation will do this if they have not gone through a testing cycle on a certain application to quell the uneasiness about how well something will work in this specific application. The risk is the ceramic insulator will cost a cylinder sleeve or two. It's likely this would not happen immediately so NGK would need to do fleet testing to determine the survivability. Fleet testing does not come cheaply. Therefore, NGK's expense in certifying the existing plug might not allow them to make a profit. I'm sure they've already looked at the limited market of the Z and decided it's just not worth it to pursue this. GetGreddy might be performing some defacto fleet testing. NGK might do well to follow their customer's experiences. Yet the question of better performance remains. I'd like to see some dyno results of the shorter iridium plug vs the longer standard plug and see the test repeated 4-6 months later before I allowed my engine to become a guinea pig.
